In Salisbury, North Carolina, on July 29, 1936, Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford was born. Dole attended Duke University after graduating from high school and earned a degree in political science there. She participated in the chapel choir, was president of the women’s student government organization, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa while attending Duke. Elizabeth completed post-graduate studies at Oxford in 1959 after receiving her degree from Duke. She subsequently accepted a position as a student teacher for a year at Melrose High School in Massachusetts. Along with the legal program, she enrolled in a master’s in education program at Harvard University. In 1965, she graduated with a J.D. from Harvard. In a class of 550 students, she was one of 24 females.

As a campaign worker for Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, who was running for president and vice president of the Democratic Party in the 1960s, Elizabeth Dole experienced her first taste of American politics.

Over the years, she ran campaigns on behalf of Senator Bob Dole, her husband. She put forth a lot of effort for the Ford-Dole presidential and vice presidential campaign in 1976 while on leave from the Federal Trade Commission. She participated in the 1980, 1988, and 1996 presidential campaigns of Bob Dole.
