Oladipo was born on May 4, 1992, in Silver Spring, Maryland, and grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. His parents are from Nigeria and moved to the United States in 1985. He has three sisters, including a twin.

He played basketball at St. Jerome Academy in Hyattsville, Maryland, and then at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville. In his senior year, he averaged 11.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game, leading his team to championships.

Oladipo chose to play basketball at Indiana University Bloomington and study sports communication broadcasting, turning down offers from other schools. He said Bloomington was a great basketball town.

In his freshman year (2010–11), he played 32 games, averaging 7.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.06 steals per game. He had his first start against Penn State and performed well.

As a sophomore (2011–12), he averaged 10.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, becoming known as Indiana’s most improved player and their best defender. The team reached the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament.

In the 2012-13 season, Oladipo became a star player, known for his defense and energy on the court. Indiana Hoosiers won the Big Ten championship, and Oladipo had an impressive field goal percentage.
