Joel Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. His dad was a military officer named Thomas Embiid, and his mom was Christine. When he was a kid, he played volleyball and soccer. At first, he wanted to be a pro volleyball player in Europe. But when he turned 15, he started playing basketball, copying his game from Hakeem Olajuwon, a famous NBA player. Luc Mbah a Moute, who was from the same city in Cameroon and an NBA player, found him at a basketball camp. Mbah a Moute became his mentor, and when Joel was 16, he moved to the United States to chase his dream of being a basketball star.
