Biography

Okafor was born on December 15, 1995, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. His father, Chukwudi, known as Chuck, is a second-generation Nigerian American of Igbo descent, and his mother, Dacresha Lanett Benton, had Black American and European-American roots. When Okafor was a kid, he lived with his mom in Moffett, Oklahoma, and his dad in Chicago. When he was 9 years old, his mom got sick with bronchitis and passed away two weeks later due to a collapsed lung. After that, Okafor moved in with his dad in Chicago and then to Rosemont. He went to Rosemont Elementary School, and it was tough because he was shy and very tall, so his classmates thought he was held back.

When he was in eighth grade and stood at 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m), the DePaul Blue Demons men’s basketball team recruited Okafor in a way that broke NCAA rules. The DePaul Athletic Director, Jean Lenti Ponsetto, openly talked about making an offer to him. Initially, the interim coach, Tracy Webster, verbally offered him a scholarship outside the DePaul locker room at Allstate Arena on January 30. This offer was reported by ESPNChicago.com and the media, causing issues due to Ponsetto’s comments. In February 2010, Ponsetto confirmed:

“We’ve been talking with this young guy for a long time, and he has been to our games. We have a relationship with him because his uncle works for the Rosemont Police Department… I think he’s a prospect who has grown up around DePaul basketball. I think he’s probably a fan and someone who has been a fan for some time, given that we’ve been playing in Rosemont for the last 30 years.”
